Singapore
Singapore is one of the coolest countries I have ever been to. It’s an ultra modern metropolis on a tiny island at the end of the Malay Peninsula, a global economic powerhouse full of business people and wealth, and yet it still has massive parks and peaceful gardens littered throughout its 278 square miles.
Where to Eat
Hawker stalls are the way to go. They’re cheap and they’re also amazing. Each stall serves its own specialty dish and has spend generations perfecting it. My personal favorite was the Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle Stall (a mouthful, I know) at the Chinatown Hawker Complex. Also, try the Singapore Sling at any bar, the classic drink consisting of gin, grenadine, and various fruit juices.
What to Do
Even though Singapore can seem ultra-modern, there is a rich Indian, Arab, Chinese, and Malay history here, each with their own distinct neighborhood. Just walking around and experiencing everything this city has to offer is an activity in and of itself. However, if you want something tangible to do, go to the Gardens by the Bay, a perfect fusion of nature and technology and an amazing way to spend an evening like none other.
Getting Around
Take the subway. The Singapore Subway is one of the nicest in the world. It’s clean, it’s efficient, and it’s relatively cheap. The only downside is that it doesn’t necessarily go everywhere you want to go in Singapore, so for some attractions, like the Night Safari, you’ll want to take a cab.
Secret Spots
Marina Bay might get all the fame with its glitzy hotels and gorgeous waterfront setting, but an equally pretty but less touristy spot is Clarke Quay, just up the Singapore River. It has restaurants, shopping, a cool walking around area, and none of the crowds that you’ll find at Marina Bay.
